Tips on Growing Your Spiritual Business
By Stephanie Rosally-Kaplan, Red Barn Promoter & Marketer
More and more people are opting for spiritual entrepreneurship and opening wellness practices. Being guided by their intuition, this is the path for them. They get certifications and are super excited after their training. They rent space or work out of their home, and wait for the clients to just show up.
But when the clients don’t come banging down their door, they get disappointed and end up walking away.
To be self employed takes work. You need to create a mission statement and have a clear vision. What’s your why? What do you want to achieve? What do you offer? How are you unique? What do you specialize in? What’s your brand?
Creating a business plan is key. The plan should include finances (budget and expected expenses), marketing, networking, and branding. Include your mission statement, and vision as well. Register your business with your local government, and know the laws of your area. The book Visionary Business by Mark Allen is a great tool for any spiritual entrepreneur.
The number one way to grow your business is to get your name out there.
I know of very talented healers, spiritual teachers, readers etc., and when they create an event no one shows. They sometimes think just creating an event on social media will bring people to them.
Yes, social media is a wonderful tool to get your name out, expand your network, and market yourself, but once you create the event you must put more energy into it for it to be a success.
A good rule of thumb is to occasionally post about your services or product, and focus on posting helpful tips, meaningful and uplifting experiences you have had, and engaging with your audience. Building those relationships will also build trust, and again, networking is the best way to build your business.
There are people who get paid specifically for social media marketing and management, because it can easily become a fulltime job, and promoting yourself is a lot of work (that many spiritual entrepreneurs shy away from).
However, marketing yourself is an integral part of your business. It’s part of the territory, so if you feel weird or gross about it, you might want to sit with the discomfort of what’s behind the fear of putting yourself out there in a big way. What are you resisting the most and why?
Here are some easy ways to market yourself
Go to online or in person networking events.
Go to SCORE (free mentoring).
Look for places you can give free talks.
Cold Call businesses where you can try to build a partnership with.
Leave your cards or flyers on local community boards
Create an easy-to-use website that has professional writing and professional images.
Create opt-in forms to help grow your email list.
Make sure you are using the right SEO.
Create a free Google My Business page.
Utilize social media with Facebook (Meta) business page, Instagram, YouTube channel, Twitter account, LinkedIn, etc.
Use social media groups (some paid groups let you advertise whenever you want, others will let you post on certain days of the week)
Don’t leave your job until the income from your new business replaces it. You may be working two jobs for some time but it won’t last forever. The work will be worth it.
Remember, it takes 2-5 years for a business to really gain momentum and profit. It can morph and change over and over throughout its life, but the initial building always takes time. This is why you need to get your name out there from the start, even if you tweak what you do. It’s all part of the process.
The best advice I can give you is trust your intuition and truly believe in yourself. Show up no matter what!
If you schedule sessions or plan classes on a certain day and have no one register, still show up! This tells the universe you’re open to clients, and you’re coming from a place of abundance and faith.
If you cancel 3 days before because no one has registered, you are telling the universe, no thanks to clients. That last email blast or social media post can really seal the deal bringing in last minute registrants, but only when you operate from an abundant mindset.
I run a spiritual awakening group and when I first started, I would have one or zero people show up. But I knew there was a need in our community to have a group to support people who are waking up spiritually. I believed in this with my whole heart so I kept on showing up, and eventually the group grew to 20 people at times. (Which is the maximum size!)
If I walked away that would not have happened. Many people quit when they are right on the brink. They lose faith in themselves, their desires and gifts, and fail to realize it could just be a test from the universe to see if they’re all in or not.
The more energy you feed your idea the more it will grow. Like attracts like, and when you can feel the passion deep within, it drives you to keep showing up again and again and again.
It’s important to be balanced, centered, and grounded while you build your business. Get good sleep and eat well. You are worthy and your self care is important. Your self talk is powerful. The words you say to yourself can lift or limit you.
If you need help, we’ve got some people at the barn who can guide you. I recommend Katie Cavenagh (Katie@feelyourlight.com) for marketing and writing, Amie Uss (itsuss@comcast.net) for web design, Jennifer Gaylord (borrowedtimeemporium@gmail.com) for spiritual coaching, and myself for professional headshots.
May the angels bless you on your new journey with success and strength.
